Fireborn is the start of something special. A new, adventure series - it reminded me a lot of His Dark Materials, Chronicles of Narnia, and the Hunger Games all rolled into one, so when you're making comparisons as big as that mid-read you know it must be good.

Fireborn follows the adventures of Twelve. An orphan, who has pledged herself to the Hunting Lodge in order to learn the art of hunting the monsters that Ember is filled with. She is fiercely independent, opposed to the offers of friendships others offer her and determined to become the best hunter she can to avenge her family.

When one night the Hunting Lodge is unexpectedly attacked by a group of goblins and a fellow student is taken, Twelve doesn't hesitate in following them, seeing this as her chance to prove to everyone that she is ready to hunt. But Twelve isn't the only one. Joined by fellow students Five and Six, alongside Dog, a guardian of the lodge, their adventure begins.

Adventure starts from page one and never really stops. From goblins, to fire sprites, the group encounter all varieties of monsters and enemies that need defeated in one way or another. Ember is a magical word that is built upon throughout and delivers fantasy, magic and adventure in equal parts. So much is packed into this one book that I know the rest of the series will continue to deliver in the same way.

Despite being filled full of magic and fantasy Fireborn also has a bleak reality at it's heart. Aisling Fowler doesn't shy away from evil in the story and for me that's what makes this such a good read. There is a full compendium of enemies to defeat, but also true heartache as we discover more about Twelve's background and what led her to join the Hunting Lodge. It's gritty without being overwhelming and balanced well so as to make the story even more enjoyable.

Fireborn is a great start to what promises to be a phenomenal series, perfect for those who like a story filled with monsters, adventure and magic.
