May Day - Josie Jaffrey

You fancy a book about crime-solving vampires I hear you cry? Well Josie Jaffrey has come up trumps with book her brand new Seekers series. I will admit that when I first read the blurb I wasn't sure how such different topics that were completely unrelated could ever combine successfully; however, I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I was sucked in and enjoyed the blend of genres.

The story follows Jack, our central crime-fighter. Having been a vampire for 20 years she is part of the Seekers, an Oxford based group of vampires (or Silver as they are called in the book) who are employed to stop humans finding out about their kind. They roam the streets amongst humans, acting in the same way as police officers, trying to protect their existence.

When a man is thrown from the top of a building, completely drained of blood and in full public sight it's undoubtedly the work of a Silver and it's up to Jack and her Seeker friends to try and solve the mystery before the humans catch on. Add in some unwanted senior Silver's sniffing around, a mortal enemy who oozes sophistication and a whole lot of binge drinking and this vampire story packs some serious punch.

May Day is filled with intrigue and underhand tactics. Just as one lead looks like it might be viable, another pops up to shift them off course. At no point when reading this did I feel like I could trust anyone. I questioned everyone just like Jack does and that's what I loved about it. No-one wants to read a crime novel where the killer is immediately obvious and this twists and turns in all directions.

Jack as a character is also full of twists and turns. She is a train-wreck waiting to happen with so many narrow misses throughout the story. From failed romances to hungover days slinking into meeting rooms, Jack was definitely a character that was difficult to like at first. However, her determination to solve the crime and her relationship with her team shines through and by the end I felt like I accepted her immature ways and supported her in her battle for justice.

May Day is perfect for those looking for something different. A thrilling YA novel packed with intrigue, mystery and a whole other sub-culture. The next book won't be out for a while but I'm sure this will become a series with a big fan following.

Vampires, crime and alcohol. A peculiar blend that creates the perfect cocktail.
